Is wool yarn itchy?
Coarser wool can be; merino is not. If you are sensitive, choose merino for anything against the skin and keep standard wool for outer layers.
Can I machine wash wool?
Many of ours, on a warm gentle cycle with wool detergent, including Cleckheaton Country and Heirloom Merino Magic 8 ply. Check the ball band, never use hot water and dry flat.
Does wool shrink?
Only if it is felted by heat and agitation: hot water, a normal machine cycle or a tumble dryer. Washed gently and dried flat it keeps its size.
Is wool or acrylic better for a blanket?
Wool is warmer and breathes; acrylic is cheaper, lighter and machine washable. For a baby blanket washed often, superwash merino or acrylic; for a couch throw, wool.
Which wool is best for beginners?
An 8 ply pure wool in a light colour, such as Cleckheaton Country. It is elastic, shows stitches clearly and is easy to unpick.
How do I keep moths away from wool?
Store finished knits and leftover balls clean, in sealed bags or boxes, with cedar or lavender. Moths go for dirty wool, so wash before putting things away for summer.
Is your wool Australian?
Cleckheaton Country, Cleckheaton Midlands Merino, Patons Dreamtime and Bambini are Australian grown wool. Others are spun overseas from wool of mixed origin.
What is superwash wool?
Wool treated so the fibres cannot felt, which lets it go through a gentle machine cycle. Most sock yarns and baby merinos are superwash.
