Which type

Straight needles are the classic pair for flat pieces such as scarves and the fronts and backs of a jumper. Circular needles, two tips joined by a cord, knit in the round for beanies and seamless jumpers, and are also the most comfortable way to knit large flat pieces, because the weight rests in your lap rather than on your wrists. Double pointed needles handle small tubes: socks, sleeves, mittens and the crown of a hat. An interchangeable set gives you tips and cords to build any circular you need.

Which material

Bamboo and wood are warm in the hand with a little grip, which stops stitches sliding off and suits new knitters and slippery yarns. Aluminium and KnitPro Zing are smooth and fast, good for tight knitters and long projects. Symfonie wood sits between the two. Birch covers the everyday sizes in bamboo and aluminium; KnitPro and Addi are the step up.

Which size

The pattern names a size in millimetres, and the ball band gives the yarn's usual size. Australian patterns use metric; older patterns and overseas ones may use UK or US numbers, so 4mm is UK 8 and US 6, and we can convert the rest for you. Buy the size the pattern asks for, then go up or down a size if your tension square comes out small or large.

For knitting in the round they are essential, and for large flat pieces they are easier on the wrists. For a scarf or a small piece, straights are fine and many people prefer the feel.
Shorter than the circumference of what you are knitting in the round: 40cm for a beanie, 60 to 80cm for a jumper body. For flat knitting, 80cm suits almost everything.
Bamboo grips the yarn slightly, which helps beginners and slippery yarns. Metal is faster and smoother, which tight knitters prefer. Many knitters keep both.

Not necessarily. Socks can also be knitted on an 80cm circular using magic loop, or on a short 23cm circular. Double pointed needles are the traditional way and what most Australian sock patterns describe.
Look for the size printed on the needle, or use a needle gauge: push the needle through the holes until you find the smallest it fits. We stock gauges and they cost very little.
