Is cotton yarn good for beginners?
It is easy to care for and shows stitches clearly, but it has no give, so it can feel stiff on the needles. Most beginners find wool or acrylic kinder; cotton is a good second project.
Can I machine wash cotton yarn?
Most of ours, on a warm cycle: Fiddlesticks, Birch Purely Cotton, DMC Happy Cotton and the Patons blends. Heirloom Cotton is hand wash. Cotton can shrink a little the first time, so wash your tension square the same way.
Does cotton yarn stretch?
Not while knitting, but a heavy cotton garment can drop in length when worn. Patterns written for cotton allow for this. Dry cotton knits flat.
What is the best cotton for dishcloths?
A firm 8 or 10 ply cotton such as Birch Purely Cotton or Fiddlesticks Finch. They scrub well and survive hot washes.
What is the best cotton for amigurumi?
DMC Happy Cotton or Fiddlesticks Posie on a 2.5mm to 3mm hook, worked tightly so the stuffing does not show.
Is cotton yarn warm?
No. It breathes and feels cool, which is the point in summer. For warmth, choose wool or a cotton and wool blend such as Patons Solace.
What needle size for 8 ply cotton?
4mm, the same as any 8 ply. Because cotton has no stretch, some knitters go down to 3.75mm for a firmer fabric.
Is cotton good for babies?
Yes for summer, and for babies who react to wool. It is soft, washable and does not prickle. Choose a soft 4 or 8 ply cotton rather than a firm dishcloth cotton.
