Choosing Chunky Yarn
Frequently asked questions
What ply is chunky yarn?
In Australia chunky means 12 ply and above: 12 ply bulky, 14 ply chunky and 16 ply super bulky. Overseas the same yarns are called bulky and super bulky.
What needle size for chunky yarn?
5 to 6mm for 12 ply, 6.5 to 7mm for 14 ply and 8mm or larger for 16 ply. The ball band gives the exact size.
Is chunky yarn good for beginners?
Yes. Stitches are big and easy to see, projects finish quickly and the fabric hides uneven tension. A garter stitch scarf in 12 ply is a classic first project.
How much chunky yarn for a blanket?
Roughly 1,200 to 1,500 metres for a throw around 120 by 150cm, which is 10 to 14 balls of 100g depending on the yarn. Check the pattern.
Can I use two strands of 8 ply instead?
Yes. Two strands of 8 ply held together knit at about 12 ply, which is a useful way to use up 8 ply on a chunky pattern.
Can I crochet with chunky yarn?
Yes, on a 6.5mm to 10mm hook. Chunky crochet blankets and baskets work up fast. Keep to simple stitches, as the fabric gets thick and heavy.
Is chunky yarn warm?
Very. A chunky wool blend jumper is one of the warmest things you can knit, though it is also heavy, so short, simple shapes work best.
Will a chunky knit stretch out of shape?
Heavy garments can drop with wear. A wool and acrylic blend holds its shape better than pure wool, and storing knits folded rather than on a hanger helps.
