Leaflets, books and free downloads

A leaflet is a single design; a pattern book collects several around one yarn. Our printed range is mostly Patons, Cleckheaton and Panda, written for the yarns on the same shelf, so the tension and quantities are already worked out. Free patterns are PDFs from the same brands: add one to your cart, check out at no cost and it is emailed to you.

Reading an Australian pattern

Australian patterns name the yarn ply and give tension in stitches and rows to 10cm. The ply is the important number: if you substitute a yarn, keep the ply the same and knit a tension square before you start. Needle sizes are metric. Crochet patterns use UK terms unless they say otherwise, so a UK treble is a US double crochet; the books say which they use.

Picking a first project

A scarf or a beanie in 8 ply teaches the basics without much shaping. A baby cardigan is a good first garment, small enough to finish and forgiving of tension. If you are unsure, bring the pattern in or email it and we will match a yarn and needles to it, or book a class and make it with us.

How do the free patterns work?

Add the pattern to your cart and check out; there is no charge. The PDF is emailed to you straight away.

Can I use a different yarn from the one in the pattern?

Yes, if it is the same ply and your tension square matches the pattern's. Check the metres per ball so you buy enough.

Do you use UK or US crochet terms?

Australian patterns use UK terms, where a treble is the US double crochet. Books from overseas say which they use on the first page.

What size pattern should I buy?

Patterns usually cover several sizes in one leaflet or book. Check the finished measurements listed, not just the size name, and pick the bust or chest you want.

Do you have patterns for beginners?

Yes. The Learn to Knit and Learn to Crochet leaflets, the beginner books, and simple scarf, beanie and blanket patterns. Ask in store and we will point you to one that suits.

Are your patterns in Australian sizes and terms?

Patons, Cleckheaton and Panda patterns are written in Australia: metric needles, ply weights, tension over 10cm and UK crochet terms. Overseas books say what they use.

Can I get help if I get stuck on a pattern?

Yes. Bring it into the shop, or email a photo of the row you are on. Our classes also cover reading patterns.
